Merry Christmas from John!
I wish to all my readers Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2012 filled with peace and prosperity. I hope to see you all in our beautiful island next year!
Here are three videos from a christmas concert given by the Corfu conservatory's children choir and the brass ensemble in the catholic cathedral of San Giacomo. In the first one, the choir is singing the famous spanish carol "Feliz Navidad" while in the last two the brass ensemble is perfomorming "Christmas swing" and a selection of corfiot and other greek carols.

Strong walnut sized hailstorm in Corfu today!
Today around 3:15 p.m., Corfu town experienced one of the strongest hailstorms of last decades. It is a rainy day but nobody could imagine this rare phenomenon would happen. Walnut sized hail was falling for ten minutes turning the streets white, like if it had snowed. Hopefully, as far as I know up to this moment, it did not provoked any damage. Below there are few photos and a video from today's hailstorm.

A concert in honour of our patron saint
Today our island celebrates its patron saint, Saint Spyridon who has helped Corfu and many people in many occasions. In order to honour him, every year on December the 12th, the Philharmonic Society of Corfu is giving a concert in its own mini concert hall on Nikiforou Theotoki street. The hall is always full of people waiting for the concert to start.

Christmas time in Corfu - brand new christmas lights in Annunziata square
Christmas time is here and Corfu town has been decorated with million of lights. This year, there's a enormous lighting scheme embracing the (newly baptised) Annunziata square. It hangs above the useless little roundabout at the front of the old campanile. People stop to stare and admire the new addition, so much needed in the grey economical times our country is going through.

Hiking at a remote road, Nissaki Corfu - Christmas 2009
A very peaceful place on a hill full of olive trees and other greenery. A "haunted" storage house, recently inhabited maybe by an immigrant or a hermit adds a touch of mystery in my walk. A complex with villas and pool revealed at the end of this part, uninhabited at this time of the year.
The second part of my tour - trying to find my way out of the villas and heading downhill towards the place where a crazy man commited suicide. This place was haunted by his ghost, someone could hear some strange sounds until a priest was called to help the neighbours get rid of the apparition. Finally, I reached my home, after walking almost a kilometre of unspoilted nature.

A gloomy Christmas day at my village, Nissaki
Yesterday it was Christmas day. As many of other families, we went to celebrate at my village Nissaki. Nissaki is 21 km north of Corfu Town. It's hilly and have some nice small pebbly beaches which are popular to well-to-do tourists from UK and Germany. It is full of apartments catering with tourists and it's not so dense like other more traditional villages in the island. Our apartments are on a hill almost downhill from Pantokratoras peak. We get breathtaking views from up there - the southern tip of Albania could be seen, the shoreline of Thesprotia, Corfu Town with its fortresses and on a clear day, Paxos island could be spotted as well. Nissaki is dotted with hundreds of olive trees adding a deep silver green shade to the place.

Christmas in Corfu: How central streets look under Xmas Lights
Like every Christmas time and from the St. Spyridon's Day (12 Dec) to St. John's Day (07 Jan), our town is decorated with million of light bulbs. The spectacle of a sea of thousand stars hanging above our heads makes a festive mood every night.

New Years Eve at Edem Bar, Dassia!
On NYE, I decided instead of going to a very busy and mainstream bar, I preferred to go somewhere where I could listen the music I like and have a drink without getting annoyed by any overcrowding. So I went to Edem bar at Dassia, a place which is most known as a beach bar, open in summer. Most local people don't know that actually Edem is also open during the colder months of the year.
Edem is a good alternative to the overcrowded and mainstream Corfu Town bars, offering nights with different kind of music, ranging from rock music to trance and psychedelic. There is also a nice fireplace which makes the place feel warm and welcoming.
Here are some photos and one video from my NYE at Edem. Dj Dimo Koursaris on the decks - known as the resident dj of the now long gone Hippodrome club:

Oxford Street Christmas Lights 2007
Today evening the lights in Oxford Street were lighten up on 18.16 GMT. That practically means that the holiday shopping period has just kicked off and Christmas are now almost one month and a half away!
