"Corfu Museum" - a new bilingual site dedicated to the rich Corfiot history

  A reader of this blog, Ioannis Petsalis, made a site about our local rich history, He named it "Corfu museum" (http://www.corfu-museum.gr/index.php)  and, like its title says, has an historic context. In its pages, old rare photos and documents from his personal collection could be found, as well as articles about local historical matters and personalities.

  I highly suggest visiting and bookmarking this bilingual site. It is being updated regularly with more material with the intention of becoming a rich interactive Internet-based virtual museum. You can also become a member by hitting the "register" button at the bottom left of the main page. Becoming a member, you can also publishg your article or posting old Corfu pictures from your archive.

The "Bring Them Back" campaign for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures

  Since last month there is an online e-petition for the return of the Parthenon marbles. These fine pieces are hosted in the British Museum in London since the early 19th century when Lord Elgin literally stole them from Acropolis in Athens. Since then, there were various initiatives for the returning to Athens but the british denied claiming that there isn't a proper place in Greece to host them. Nowadays, with the brand new Acropolis Museum, there is a good reason to get them back. The museum is very modern and very close to Acropolis. There is a special place which was left unoccupied for the marbles.

  If you love Greece and its history and if you believe that the marbles belong to the greek people and not to the british, then vote for their return home. The site of the petition has a nice video, subtitled in five languages, presented by journalist Maria Houkli and famous greek presenter of the french "Star Academy" Nikos Aliagas. The initiative is supported by "Metaxa" drinks. If one million signs will be gathered, then we will be able to set the matter to the European Parliament.

  All you have to do is to follow the procedure described at the right side in the main page. Then a confirmation email will be sent to you, confirming that your vote had been registered.

Corfuland has installed a webcamera at Cafe Floisvos in Kanoni area. Being in a trial period, the gives you a good view of Vlaherna chapel, which is the most famous landmark of Corfu. The image refreshes every few seconds. To log in, enter "corfuland" as the username and the password.

Brace yourself for the new Facebook layout!

According to www.msn.co.uk:

"The world's number one social-networking site, Facebook, has announced that more changes to its look are afoot – news that will no doubt bring with it a barrage of complaints from users.

Although the new layout is not that much of a significant departure, when Facebook went through its first makeover the site's forums were alight with vitriol.

Freudian changes

Noticeable changes of the homepage include the 'What are you doing right now?' bar changing to the rather Freudian 'What's on your mind?'.

The readability of Events has improved as well, with birthdays and upcoming events shunted to the top. What is noticeable is that the advertising on the right-hand side has increased significantly.

The left-hand side of the page is actually being used now for Filters, so you can categorise your friends as school mates, work colleagues and so on.

The main stream of information that got so many users backs up when it was first introduced can now be cut down even more, which should reduce the amount of traffic received from those who have a lot of 'friends'.

Coming soon

There's no word on when the changes will take place, but Facebook is giving people plenty of warning by posting a 'Changes to the Home page are coming soon' banner on the site right now."

We should prepare ourselves for that change. I think Facebook will become more exciting and popular with its new layout.

Tired of waiting Google Streetview for London?

We have an alternative solution!

Some Londoners report that they have spotted Google-logo cars with big cameras on their tops cruising London streets these months. But if you logged in Google maps, you'll notice that there are no Streetview for London yet!

"Funky Tales" compilation available for free download now!

Eurovision 2008 - Kalomoira and Martakis songs leaked on Internet!

Heard on TV today this morning! I searched the web and I found two rapidshare links with songs which Kalomoira and Kostas Martakis will contest to find who among them will compete in this year's Eurovision.

EU officially bans P2P filesharing

"The European supreme court has ruled that lower authorities are not compelled to order disclosure of file-sharers' identities by ISPs in civil lawsuits. The decision will hamper the efforts of rights-holder bodies to clamp down on digital copying through the courts.
The decision was handed down today in a dispute between Promusicae, the Spanish music-rights association, and Iberian heavyweight telco Telefonica. The ISP contended that it did not have to disclose its customers' identities in civil - rather than criminal - proceedings. Promusicae had sought the names of Telefonica users who had illegally downloaded music on KaZaA, so as to launch civil suits against them.
"Community law does not require the member states, in order to ensure the effective protection of copyright, to lay down an obligation to disclose personal data in the context of civil proceedings," according to the court ruling as reported by Reuters.
Music industry and other likeminded copyright groups would much prefer to mount civil actions, as they are cheaper and have a lower burden of proof than criminal ones. But if ISPs don't have to disclose their customers' names based on IP logs, this becomes very difficult.
That said, national judiciaries are free to establish local rules in favour of civil disclosure if they want to: the EU court has merely said that this isn't compulsory under European law.
"The directives on the protection of personal data also allow the member states to provide for exceptions to the obligation to guarantee the confidentiality of traffic data," the court stated, leaving the door open for other countries to let rights-holder bodies go the easier civil route. ®"

You see that maybe in the near future downloading with Limewire or Emule will be quite dangerous cause the EU court may sue you and the amount you should pay, in order not to get imprisoned, will not be low. I wish torrent and rapidshare downloading won't be affected!

Zaxopoulos-gate: A brief account on what happened...(In greek - the text below is not mine)

Η οδύσσεια μιας συμβασιούχας

Ο πιτσιρίκος καταγράφει τις περιπέτειες μιας αγνής γυναίκας που προσπαθεί να βρει μια θέση στην αγορά εργασίας, αλλά όλοι θέλουν να την πηδήξουν. Μεγάλο προβληματισμό έχει προκαλέσει στην κυβέρνηση αλλά και στην ελληνική κοινωνία η υπόθεση Ζαχόπουλου. Ο τέως γενικός γραμματέας του υπουργείου Πολιτισμού αποπειράθηκε να αυτοκτονήσει, πηδώντας από το μπαλκόνι του σπιτιού του, και μεταφέρθηκε στο νοσοκομείο σε κρίσιμη κατάσταση. Στην αρχή, κάποιοι απέδωσαν αυτή του την πράξη στην απελπισία που τον είχε κυριεύσει εξαιτίας της άρνησης του Βρετανικού Μουσείου να μαςεπιστρέψει τα Μάρμαρα του Παρθενώνα, ενώ δεν ήταν λίγοι και αυτοί πουυποστήριζαν πως δεν μπόρεσε να ξεπεράσει το γεγονός ότι ο Λάκης Λαζόπουλος διέκοψε τις τηλεοπτικές του εμφανίσεις και έφυγε για τη ΝέαΥόρκη, στερώντας από τη χώρα τον σημαντικότερο πνευματικό της ταγό. Σύντομα, όμως, στην υπόθεση Ζαχόπουλου εμφανίστηκε μιαγυναίκα-κλειδί. Σε όλες τις υποθέσεις υπάρχει μια γυναίκα-κλειδί. Για κάποιον ανεξήγητο λόγο, άντρας-κλειδί δεν έχει εμφανιστεί ποτέ. Η γυναίκα αυτή ήταν συμβασιούχος υπάλληλος στο υπουργείο Πολιτισμού και ο Ζαχόπουλος της είχε υποσχεθεί να τη μονιμοποιήσει, οπότε κι αυτήτον πίστεψε επειδή ήταν αγαθομούνα. Οι άντρες, όμως, δεν κρατούν τις υποσχέσεις που δίνουν στα αγνά και απονήρευτα κορίτσια και το μόνο πουτους νοιάζει είναι να τα κουτουπώσουν. Αυτή όμως -επειδή δεν ήταν και εντελώς αγαθομούνα- είχε τραβήξει σε βίντεο τα φιστικώματα και άρχισε να τον εκβιάζει, ενώ παράλληλαυποστήριζε πως διέθετε και έγγραφα που αποδείκνυαν πως εμπλεκόταν σεοικονομικά σκάνδαλα. Πήρε μάλιστα σβάρνα τα κανάλια και ήθελε να τουςδώσει το υλικό για να τον κάνει ρόμπα στο πανελλήνιο. Βλέπουμε δηλαδήπως ήταν και εκδικήτρα - από αγαθομούνα έγινε φαρμακομούνα.Τότε, ο Ζαχόπουλος δεν άντεξε την επερχόμενη δημόσια διαπόμπευση καιφούνταρε από τον τέταρτο όροφο στον ακάλυπτο. Το γεγονός πως φούνταρεστον ακάλυπτο και όχι στο δρόμο δείχνει πως ακόμα και την τελευταίαστιγμή φέρθηκε σεμνά και ταπεινά και αναδεικνύει τη διαφορά πολιτικούπολιτισμού που υπάρχει ανάμεσα στη Νέα Δημοκρατία και το ΠΑΣΟΚ: ανυποθέσουμε πως κάποιο στέλεχος του ΠΑΣΟΚ -για παράδειγμα, ο ΕυάγγελοςΒενιζέλος- αποφάσιζε να αυτοκτονήσει, αφενός θα καλούσε πρώτα τιςτηλεοπτικές κάμερες για να καταγράψουν τη θεαματική του πτώση καιαφετέρου θα φούνταρε σίγουρα στο πεζοδρόμιο ή στο δρόμο, αδιαφορώνταςπλήρως για το αν θα προσγειωθεί στην καρκάλα κάποιου ανύποπτου,μικρομεσαίου περαστικού, με αποτέλεσμα να τον κάνει αλοιφή, ή για τοαν θα δημιουργήσει μια τεράστια γούβα στο αυτοκίνητο κάποιου μηπρονομιούχου Έλληνα.Από την άλλη, μερικά ροζ DVD και κάποιες κατηγορίες για οικονομικάσκάνδαλα δεν είναι δυνατόν να οδηγούν κάποιον στην αυτοκτονία. Δηλαδή,ο Βενιζέλος που έχασε από τον Γιώργο Παπανδρέου τι έπρεπε να κάνει; Νααυτοπυρποληθεί στο Σύνταγμα; Ή μήπως να κάνει δίαιτα;Α, όλα κι όλα - είναι πολύ ευαίσθητοι οι νεοδημοκράτες σε ζητήματα ηθικής. Όχι πάντα - μόνο όταν αποκαλύπτονται οι πομπές τους. Βέβαια,το κακό ξεκινάει από τις γυναίκες. Αυτές φταίνε για όλα. Δεν τουςάρεσε που ήταν αραχτές στο σπίτι και είχαν τον άντρα, τον κουβαλητή, τον κιμπάρη, να τους τα φέρνει όλα στα χέρια - τώρα θέλουν όλες νακάνουν καριέρα.Και προκειμένου να κάνουν καριέρα, κοιμούνται με όποιον βρουν μπροστάτους, ακόμα κι αν είναι τέρας - έλα μωρέ, σου λένε, αν βάλεις στονάντρα ένα μαξιλάρι στο πρόσωπο ή κλείσεις τα φώτα, όλοι ίδιοι είναι. Οι Ελληνίδες πρέπει να αφήσουν τις καριέρες και να κάθονται στα σπίτιατους να ξεσκατίζουν κάνα παιδί, να μαγειρεύουν κάνα φαγητό και νασιδερώνουν κάνα πουκάμισο.Και μην ακούσω τίποτα ανοησίες για ισότητα γιατί αν τις ενδιέφερε ηισότητα, θα την επιθυμούσαν όχι μόνο για τους εαυτούς τους αλλά καιγια τις αλλοδαπές που πουλιούνται σήμερα στην Αθήνα για μερικέςχιλιάδες ευρώ. Δεν έχω ακούσει καμιά Ελληνίδα να νοιάζεται για τηνισότητα των Ρωσίδων - «πουτάνες» τις ανεβάζουν, «πουτάνες» τιςκατεβάζουν ( σ.σ. της αναφοράς μου στις γυναίκες εξαιρούνται όλες οι αναγνώστριες του blog, επειδή είναι απόλυτα χειραφετημένες, ακέραιεςκαι δίκαιες). Σαν να μην έφτανε η απόπειρα αυτοκτονίας του Ζαχόπουλου, αποπειράθηκενα αυτοκτονήσει κι ένας δικηγόρος που εμπλεκόταν στην υπόθεση. Έπεσεστις ρόδες ενός φορτηγού, αλλά πάλι τζίφος η δουλειά - οι Έλληνες δενείναι πια ικανοί ούτε να αυτοκτονήσουν. Ο επόμενος που θα κάνειαπόπειρα αυτοκτονίας θα πρέπει να τα τινάξει οπωσδήποτε, γιατί θακαταλάβουν οι Τούρκοι πως είμαστε εντελώς άχρηστοι και θα μπουκάρουνε.Βέβαια -με την τροπή που έχουν πάρει τα πράγματα και μιας και δενπεθαίνουμε με τίποτα- σε έναν ενδεχόμενο πόλεμο με την Τουρκία μπορεί να τους κατατροπώσουμε: θα κόβουν οι Τούρκοι το κεφάλι ενός Έλληνα καιθα φυτρώνουν στη θέση του δυο. Σαν λερναίες ύδρες θα είμαστε - θα μπαίνουμε στη μάχη με ένα κεφάλι και θα βγαίνουμε με πενήντα. Δεν μπορείς να λύσεις και το Ασφαλιστικό με αυτές τις συνθήκες: πρώτα ήλπιζες πως ο γέρος θα πάει από πέσιμο και θα σταματήσει να παίρνει σύνταξη - τώρα θα πέφτει από την ταράτσα, θα κάνει γκελ στην άσφαλτοκαι θα προσγειώνεται στην καρέκλα του καφενείου έτοιμος για πρέφα.Βέβαια, εκεί που έγινε ο χαμός είναι με το ροζ DVD. Κάθε βράδυ στις ειδήσεις, όλο και να μιλάνε για «περιπτύξεις» και «συνεύρεση».«Περιπτύξεις» η Τρέμη, «συνεύρεση» ο Σόμπολος - και όλο να κομπιάζουν και να κάνουν ντροπές. Καλά, δεν γαμάει κανείς στην ελληνικήτηλεόραση; Ραμμένο το 'χουνε; Αυτό το ρήμα «γαμώ» δεν το ξέρουνε;Είναι μια ωραιότατη λέξη, απόλυτα περιγραφική. Πάλι καλά που δενλέγανε πως ο Ζαχόπουλος με τη συμβασιούχα «παίζανε το γιατρό»!Τι; Δεν μας αφορά τι κάνει ο κάθε άνθρωπος στο κρεβάτι του; Συμφωνώ.Από τη στιγμή, όμως, που αποφάσισες να περιγράφεις επί δέκα μέρες τικάνουν δυο γυμνοί άνθρωποι, πες τα πράγματα με το όνομά τους. Πες«ήσαντε δυο και γαμιόσαντε»!Γιατί, σε διαφορετική περίπτωση, έρχεται το πιτσιρίκι και σου λέει:«Μπαμπά, τι σημαίνει "περιπτύξεις"; Τι είναι "συνεύρεση";». Και τι νατου απαντήσεις; «Είναι αυτό που έκανε ο μπαμπάς με τη μαμά καιγεννήθηκες εσύ;». Θα του δημιουργηθεί τραύμα γιατί θα σκέφτεται πως αυτό πρέπει να είναι πολύ κακό πράγμα, αφού ο ένας χαροπαλεύει και ηάλλη είναι στη φυλακή.Από την άλλη, όμως, οι περιγραφές του ροζ DVD από τα δελτία ειδήσεωνεκτίναξαν τη λίμπιντο των Ελλήνων στα ύψη. Λογικό είναι, αφού όλο γιασεξ άκουγες και σεξ δεν έβλεπες. Με το που τελείωναν τα δελτία ειδήσεων, έτρεχαν όλοι στα βίντεο κλαμπ να προμηθευτούν τσόντες.Οι βιντεοκλαμπάδες την είχαν πάρει χαμπάρι τη δουλειά και είχαναλλάξει τους τίτλους των ταινιών. Κοιτούσες στα ράφια και έβλεπες:«Στο υπουργείο θα στον σφυρίξω τρεις φορές», «Σκύψε, συμβασιούχα!» «Η σκλάβα του πολιτισμού», «Μονιμοποίησέ με!», «Η συμβασιούχα και το άλογο».Σύμφωνα με δημοσιογραφικές πληροφορίες, ο Χρήστος Ζαχόπουλος ήτανδίπλα στη Νατάσα Καραμανλή στη μεγαλειώδη πορεία της που ξεκίνησε απότη Σχολή Νηπιαγωγών Καρδίτσας, συνεχίστηκε στην Ιατρική Σχολή τουΑριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης και την έχει φέρει ένα βήμαπριν από το Νόμπελ Ιατρικής.Οι γιατροί του κ. Ζαχόπουλου, προφανώς, δεν γνώριζαν την καλήπροσωπική σχέση του ασθενούς με τη σύζυγο του πρωθυπουργού - αν τηγνώριζαν, θα είχαν καλέσει την κυρία Καραμανλή να τους συνδράμει μετις πολύτιμες ιατρικές της γνώσεις και ο άνθρωπος θα ήταν τώρα στοσπίτι του.Αν πεις του ασθενή «θα σε αναλάβει προσωπικά η Νατάσσα Καραμανλή»,είναι σίγουρο πως -ακόμα κι αν είναι του θανατά- θα πεταχτεί αμέσωςαπό το κρεβάτι και θα ορκίζεται πως είναι περδίκι. Η γυναίκα κάνειθαύματα.Σε πολλά νοσοκομεία της χώρας, οι νοσοκόμες λένε ψέματα στουςασθενείς πως θα τους χειρουργήσει η κυρία Καραμανλή, ώστε οι ασθενείςνα τις δωροδοκούν με τεράστια ποσά για να τους αφήσουν να το σκάσουναπό τα παράθυρα.Πάντως, αν -ο μη γένοιτο- κάποιος απ' αυτούς που βοήθησαν την κυρία Καραμανλή να πάρει το πτυχίο της Ιατρικής βρεθεί στο νοσοκομείο, τοσωστό θα ήταν να τον αναλάβει η ίδια προσωπικά. Αυτό του αξίζει .

Corfu in the past... A journey through photos

A really interesting blog, especially for those which are looking to find more about Corfu's history through old photographs. Its author, George Zoumpos, collector of old photographs and a researcher of the Corfiot history did a fantastic job which you may see at

Forgotten NY - A lost metropolis uncovered.

Kevin Walsh, a native New Yorker borned and raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, was always fascinated by the ancient ads and streetlamps as well as the negleted centuries old houses found in New York.

Armed with a plain camera and an apetite of uncovering the mysteries of the vast american metropolis, Kevin started to tour and photograph parts of it. With the material he collected each time, he created a website to exhibit this and let New Yorkers and NY fans all over the world the hidden mysteries and history of their beloved city through photo-covered tours. As a result, since 1999 he covered and presented many parts of NY, from Riverdale, Bronx to Tottenville, Staten Island and from Inwood, Manhattan to Far Rockaway, Queens.

His attempt finally was justified, Forgotten NY was named one of Forbes' Best City Blogs sites, and in good company: Gothamist and Newyorkology. FNY has been profiled in all of NYC's daily newspapers, and has been mentioned by name in columns by the New York Times' Christopher Gray and David Dunlap and by the New York Sun's Francis Morrone. Got hooked with Tribal Wars....

Have you heard of Tribal Wars? Yesterday, I logged in it! It's a browser-based game set in the Middle Ages. Every player controls a small village, striving for power and glory. You can register and play the game for free! It's not addictive like the RPG ones, you can log in to your account and play whenever you want, wherever you like! Personally, I spend playing about a quarter of an hour every day, so I believe you won't spend hours in playing neither!

Greek Webcams

It's time to show you some of the best greek webcams around. Unfortunately, Greece is well behind other countries in that matter, so you can only find few of them. Anyways, here you are:

1) Athens from the Penteli Mountain slope:

This is the webcam of Nifada (snowflake in English), a site dedicated to the weather conditions in the Athens area.

As you can see, this cam has a great view over the metropolitan athens area - it updates automatically every few seconds and you can make a picture of what the Athens sky looks like any time you want to know the weather conditions in the capital.

2) Salonica high street from a balcony

Situated on a balcony over a pharmacy in the centre of Salonica, this cam shows you Egnatia avenue, the high street of the city and "Kamara", an ancient gate from the Roman times. Updates every few minutes.

3) Arillas Weather Cam - Corfu

Finally a webcam of Arillas beach in Northwestern Corfu. Updates every five minutes and it works from dawn until dusk. Especially in the dusk you can take a glimpse at the famous Corfu sunsets!
